Former Tyke Trippier looking forward to Oakwell return

Trippier was named Young Player of the Year at Barnsley last season, making 41 appearances for the Tykes in a second loan stint at the club, and breaking into the England Under-21 squad.

But while Keith Hill’s men lie 18th in the Championship with one home win to their name so far, Trippier is well aware of the threats they possess.

Yet he is confident the Clarets can bounce back from their weekend setback against Reading.

He said: “It was a disappointing result on Saturday, losing 1-0 in the last minute of injury time, but I think we can bounce back at Barnsley.

“The international break came at the wrong time because the last three games before that we were flying.

“But there are no excuses – we’ve got to look forward to the next game and go and take three points.

“But we can’t think that we can just turn up there and win.

“It won’t work like that because they are a good team with a good manager and good players.

“But if we play well like we did at Derby and Millwall, I think we can take the points from our next two away games at Barnsley and Coventry.”

Trippier has been looking forward to returning to Yorkshire since signing for Burnley from Manchester City on a season-long loan in the summer – and he pinpoints former Clarets striker Andy Gray as a dangerman.

Trippier said: “It’s a big game for me. I’ve been looking forward to going back.

“There are a few players there who have a big threat, quality players – I know what they’re about and I’ll be letting the lads know.

“I have knowledge about them – players like Butterfield and Doyle, Andy Gray.

“There are lots of good players there, and they have added a few new faces too.

“But we have quality players as well.

“You want the opposition to be worried about you and they’ll know that Jay Rodriguez, for example, is a massive threat.

“It will be a tough game, but I think we can go there with the players we’ve got and win.

“It will be a decent game.

“Before the Portsmouth game they were seven unbeaten, so that shows how well they were doing.

“But I think we can go there positive.”

The 21-year-old Trippier has represented his country at Under-18, 19, 20 and 21 level, and he admits he would love to follow the lead of Kyle Walker, who was on loan in the Championship at QPR last season, and now finds himself in the national squad and Spurs first team.

He said: “He had a really good season last year with QPR and then Aston Villa.

“He is a quality player. He plays in my position and is doing so well.

“There are a lot of good players at Tottenham in his position, but every chance he’s had he’s taken it.
