Former Clarets hero Gordon Harris dies

Clarets legend Gordon Harris has died following a short battle with cancer.

“Bomber” Harris played twice in the club’s 1959/60 First Division championship campaign, before establishing himself in the side after the departure of Brian Pilkington to Bolton in 1961.

He made 42 appearances the following season, scoring 17 goals, as Burnley finished runners-up in the First Division, and lost the FA Cup Final 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

The powerfully-built midfielder went on to make 313 appearances for the club, scoring 81 goals, and also made earned one full cap for England, in their World Cup-winning year of 1966, playing against Poland.

Born in Worksop in 1940, he was spotted by Burnley playing for a colliery team in Firbeck, and signed in January 1958.

He joined Sunderland 10 years later for £70,000, and went on to play over 120 league games, before retiring in 1971, when he moved back to Worksop and worked as a driver in the coal industry.
