Former Claret Cyril Tyson dies

Burnley Football Club is saddened to report the passing of another of the club’s pre-war players, Cyril Tyson, who has died in a care home in Birmingham at the grand old age of 93.

Cyril was born in Darwen in 1920 and joined the Turf Moor office staff at the age of 16. He worked under club secretary Alf Boland, and was then signed as an amateur player in the summer of 1937.

Cyril played at third team level but his time on the Burnley staff was brief and, following the outbreak of World War Two he joined the Army.

After the War he won a place at Cambridge University, where he became a Cambridge ‘Blue’ in football.

He then went on to become a language teacher, specialising in French and Italian, and was also a football coach.

He retired in 1986 and always spoke fondly of Burnley FC, continuing to follow their progress for the rest of his life.

The thoughts of all of us at Turf Moor are with Cyril’s family at this sad time.
