Hendrick has reportedly agreed a four-year contract at St James' Park, after turning down the opportunity to stay at Turf Moor, leaving at the end of his deal at the end of June.

Sean Dyche had been eager to hold onto the versatile midfielder, and was frustrated that his future wasn't tied up before Project Restart, as he was left without Hendrick, Aaron Lennon and Joe Hart for the last nine games: "Well, all of them I would've kept - certainly in the short term.

"But obviously I don't sort the contracts out, so yeah.

"It's not ideal, but it's part of management, it's one of those things."

Talks had taken place, as Hendrick had said in November: “The talks are definitely active. I’ve said it since I’ve come in – it’s a great group and I love coming into training every day.

“It’s sort of easy with the group we have and I’m enjoying my football too.

“The main thing is to enjoy your football – it’s not a long career so you need to make sure you enjoy every minute.”

The 28-year-old was a club record signing, in excess of £10m, in the summer of 2016, as Burnley beat Hull City to the Derby County midfielder's signature, after a stellar Euro 2016 with the Republic of Ireland, who reached the last 16.

Hendrick went on to score 10 goals in 139 appearances for the club, helping secure Europa League football with a seventh place finish in 2017/18
