Former Burnley forward Ron Fenton dies

Burnley Football Club is saddened to learn of the death of former player Ron Fenton, aged 73.

Fenton joined the Clarets from Durham Boys in 1957 and made his first team debut in October 1960.

The South Shields-born inside forward was a valuable squad member of the Burnley squad in the halcyon days of the early 1960s, as the newly-crowned First Division Champions battled on domestic and European fronts.

He made his debut in October 1960, scored twice in the League Cup quarter final victory at Southampton in February 1961, later playing in the semi-final against Aston Villa.

Although his appearances were limited to just 15, largely due to the form of the likes of Jimmy McIlroy and Jimmy Robson, Turf Moor honours did come his way.

Fenton won three consecutive Lancashire Senior Cup medals between 1960-62 and was a regular in the Central League Championship side of 1961/62.

Fenton later played for West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City and Brentford and, in a coaching career, played a notable part in Nottingham Forest’s incredible success story under Brian Clough.

Burnley Football Club would like to send our deepest condolences to all the family and friends of Ron and the flag at Turf Moor will fly at half mast for a period of remembrance.
