Former Burnley FC manager dies aged 67

former Clarets manager John Benson (left) has died at the age of 67.

Mr Benson took over as Burnley manager at the beginning of the 1984/85 season following the dismissal of John Bond.

Initially given the role of caretaker boss, he was appointed manager one month into the season. Unfortunately he could not prevent the club from being relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time in its 100-plus-year history and was sacked. He died following a short illness.

A statement on the club’s website said: “Burnley Football Club is saddened to learn former manager John Benson has passed away. The thoughts of all at Turf Moor are with John’s family and friends.”
