Fitness key to Burnley boss Dyche

THE focus has been on fitness for Burnley this week, with boss Sean Dyche able to run the rule over his new charges.

Ahead of the visit of Charlton Athletic tomorrow, Dyche has been delighted with his squad’s response to his way of doing things in a clear week on the back of three games in eight days.

The early signs have been positive, in the performances against Wolves, Leeds and Ipswich, that the players are buying into his “minimum requirement, maximum effort” mantra, which has been further enhanced at Gawthorpe this week.

Dyche is determined to maintain Burnley’s attacking emphasis, while finding that balance defensively, and on top of the technical and tactical work, he firmly believes blood, sweat and tears will only serve his side well.

Fitness is a key area, as Dyche explained: “The game is now teaching all coaches, managers and players that you have to do certain things, and one of them is cover the ground. It’s a simple fact.

Barcelona, historically, over the Champions League seasons cover more ground than anyone, so if it’s good enough for Barcelona, who are a free-flowing passing side, then it’s good enough for any team.

“We work with the ball, we do some science testing with them, which we think is appropriate, but more as a gauge, that’s not a weekly thing.
