First win of the season will change the narrative, says Burnley boss Sean Dyche

Chris Wood scored the only goal of the game in the eighth minute when firing past Crystal Palace's Vicente Guaita from close range after being picked out by Jay Rodriguez.

The victory - Burnley's first in the league since mid-July when beating Norwich City at Carrow Road - pulled Fulham into the relegation zone alongside Sheffield United and West Brom.

"Getting that win, however it comes around, calms the story a little bit and gives you something to build on," said the Burnley boss.

"I think there has been a lot of work going into it over the last few games. Confidence is a tricky customer. We spoke to players in the international break about it and gave some thought to it

"You start by taking care of yourself and taking care of your performance. There were a lot of pleasing aspects of the game.

"It's a starting point, but we know there's lots of work to be done. It takes our points tally ip and gets us out of the bottom three."

The hosts never looked like relinquishing their lead in the first half, but were reliant on goalkeeper Nick Pope to preserve their advantage after the break.

After Johann Berg Gudmundsson squandered the opportunity to put the game to bed - with his first time effort coming back off the bar - the England international stopper leapt to his side's rescue.

Pope spread himself well to deny Michy Batshuayi when Dwight McNeil's wayward pass left his team-mate exposed before producing an excellent point blank save to keep out substitute Christian Benteke.

"Some of our football particularly in the first half was very good and I thought we kept them down to very little.

"In the second half they got nervy, even I was wondering, we missed two golden chances and I am pleased for them to see it through.

"We defended fantastically well down at Brighton and found more of a balance to our performance tonight. We were effective in the final third and we defended well.

"I thought we found a good balance, I thought some of our football was very good and effective.

"We played in the right manner, we tried to create chances and we limited them to very little other than shots from distance."

Dyche added: "That's the way we have to operate here, it's the Premier League. Sometimes people question it, which I've no problem with, but we do what we think is appropriate for the team to win games.

"It is our third clean sheet in five games so that was something to build on. We knew it would be a challenge to get going this season, but we're starting to look like a more rounded squad.

"If you add all that together, with the win and clean sheet, the feel good factor is certainly coming back into the group."
