Finance not only issue in loan market

Finance wasn’t the only reason Burnley failed to bolster their squad ahead of the close of the loan window on Thursday.

Supporters were disappointed not to see any additions made to the squad ahead of a packed festive schedule, with no further signings now permitted until January 1st.

But boss Sean Dyche was eager to dismiss claims the board had not backed him in the transfer market.

The Clarets were particularly keen to add a striker, with Danny Ings and Sam Vokes the only available senior frontmen, and a move to land Bolton Wanderers’ Craig Davies was ultimately unsuccessful.

But Dyche said: “We tried a number of different things but it’s not just money.

“I must make that clear.

“Of course we have to be careful, but it’s not just money that allows those things to happen.

“It’s alignment of circumstance, of a player being available, and one of the biggest challenges we had, of course, is that anyone in the Championship doesn’t want to give us players. We’re up there, so they don’t want to see us strengthen.

“That was one of the hardest things within the Championship.”

He added: “If you go into the Premier League (for players) of course that’s where the money does get interesting. That’s where it becomes the challenge.

“And the other thing is that people are not stupid, they see what our strikers are achieving.

“Danny Ings got another one on Saturday.

“If you’re a striker - we were looking in other areas, but particularly a striker - you’re looking and thinking ‘am I really going to start?’

“You might do over time, but am I going to start the next game and the one after that? Probably not at the moment. In fact, definitely not. I’m the manager and I can tell you definitely not!”
