Ex-Claret Clarke Carlisle facing ‘long road to recovery’: statement

Former Claret Clarke Carlisle, who was seriously injured in a road accident before Christmas, is facing a “long road to full recovery”, his family have said.

In a statement released on behalf of the 35-year-old’s family, the Professional Footballers’ Association (of which Mr Carlisle was previously chairman), reads: “Our family and especially Clarke, would like to thank each and every person for their unbelievable support at this very difficult time.

“The fantastic and expert attention of all of the staff at Leeds General infirmary has brought him from a critical condition to a stable and relatively comfortable one.

“However, this will be a long road to full recovery and the family would request that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Police are investigating the incident while happened at 7-30am on December 22nd in which pedestrian Mr Carlisle was involved in a collision with a lorry. The road was closed and he was airlifted to hospital.

Fans staged a minute’s applause for the Preston-born father of three at the Burnley FC v Liverpool match at Turf Moor on Boxing Day and support has flooded in from his previous clubs, including Preston North End.

Following his retirement from professional football, Mr Carlisle has worked as a commentator for both television and radio, as well as leading work on fighting prejudice in football and promoting mental health issues.

It was revealed in the national media this week that he is facing an appearance in court after being accused of failing to give a specimen to police who stopped him while he was driving in London just 36 hours before he was rushed to hospital.
