Dyer winging his way into Turf Moor

The 33-year-old terminated his Watford contract before the close of the transfer window.

And, as a free agent, the pacy wideman is now able to link up with the Clarets for the final 15 games of the season, as they push for promotion back to the Premier League.

Dyer spent the second half of last season on loan at Birmingham from Vicarage Road, as the Hornets finished as Championship runners-up, and hasn’t made a senior appearance for Watford this season.

But he has plenty of experience at this level, having spent six years at Leicester City, who he helped to the Championship title, ahead of Burnley in 2014 – scoring the goal which secured the title in a 1–0 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Birmingham-born, Dyer started his career at West Bromwich Albion, and had loan spells with Kidderminster Harriers, Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers before a brief stay with Millwall.

He joined MK Dons in 2006, and had two years there before his switch to Leicester.

Dyer looked likely to join Ipswich Town last week, but, having missed out on Brentford’s Alan Judge, before Alex Pritchard’s 11th-hour decision to join West Brom ahead of Burnley on loan from Spurs, Sean Dyche has added extra competition out wide for the remainder of the campaign.

Dyche, meanwhile, backed Andre Gray to bounce back after missing key chances, including a penalty, in the goal-less draw at Reading.

Dyche said: “Some of his movement – his movement for the first chance is absolutely exceptional – he dips his shoulder and nicks a yard, and he puts it anywhere other than where he did, and it’s a goal.

“That’s where he’s learning. His movement is sharp as, some of his hold up play is still improving, he’s getting used to the group he’s working with.”

Dyche was also happy with the display, despite failing to kill off the Royals: “I was really pleased with the performance. You have to take the pitch into consideration, and on the whole we’ve not given too much away, we’ve taken the game on in the second half particularly, created chances - on another day you win, but it’s a clean sheet away from home and another point.

“You have to respect the opposition as well, and they’ve only been beaten three times there, so they’re obviously no mugs, we knew it would be a hard-fought affair and it proved to be that. I thought we edged it overall, particularly with chances, but we take our clean sheet, we take our point and another effective performance back home with us.”

Dean Marney again missed out with a calf niggle, and Dyche said: “Deano will still be with the physios this week I would imagine. It’s not actually too major, but we’ve had to make sure we give him every chance to be fit.”
