The pair’s contribution was significant in victory over the Saints as Heaton saved Dusan Tadic’s second half spot kick before Barnes netted his second of the season to secure three points.

The Saints had scored 29 successive spot kicks prior to the £11m Serbian’s 61st minute failure and it proved costly for Ronald Koeman’s side.

“You need a scratch of luck and we got that with the goal but it can’t be said with the penalty save because I think that was an outstanding save rather than a miss,” Dyche said.

“I think Tom’s more than just a penalty specialist, he’s been recognised as a very good goalkeeper.

“Ashley was terrific at QPR last week, I only took him off because he’d given everything and I thought he just ran out of energy.

“He can be an awkward customer, he’s a newcomer and people would not know much about it and he really does stick at it, his stats are through the roof.”

The Clarets climbed out of the Premier League’s bottom three after recording a fifth clean sheet of the campaign. Southampton joined Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Hull City as clubs to fire blanks against the Clarets this term.

“I thought there were some good flashes of good play and then a resilience at the end to get our fifth clean sheet in 15 games, which is a marker in itself at this level,” Dyche said.

“We have a way of being resilient enough to get wins and results, and today we got the win.”
