Dyche points to injuries after friendly defeat

Burnley were missing Jelle Vossen, Sam Vokes and Marvin Sordell at the Proact Stadium, meaning his carefully-laid plans - in terms of individuals’ gametime - were seriously affected.

Lukas Jutkiewicz was the sole orthodox striker on show again, and was on target with the opening goal - his third in pre-season - while George Boyd put Burnley 2-0 up, before the hosts came back to win.

Dyche said: “At this stage we’re working from very low numbers, we were struggling to make subs at the end because we have another game on Tuesday, and obviously are missing our strikers which makes a big difference to the way we play.

“First half, overall I thought we controlled it, and the game should have been out of sight with the chances we had, but credit to Chesterfield, they went hard all game and made loads of subs, and had that freshness at the end.

“We’ll get that over 95 minutes from playing these games, so that’s an important factor.”

Burnley passed the ball with real purpose in the first half, as Dyche added: “We were very good first half an hour particularly, they got a little bit of the ball the last 15 minutes, but we conceded a really poor goal, Kights gets done on the outside and they have an easy goal, but pre-season is to get those glitches out of the system.

“In the second half they scored a worldy and a scramble at the end, but it will be different when we get our strikers back, because they often change the way the team work and the outcome.

“We’ve brought Jelle Vossen in and haven’t really seen that much of him apart from in training, Vokesy we want to get fully fit, Marvin Sordell, they’re not serious, we think they’ll probably be ready for Tuesday so that gives us more bodies.

“But it’s interrupted the plan because we wanted one group to play 90 today and another group on Tuesday, with some crossing over, and with the injuries they hold you back from getting your main team out there and fully fit.

“We may possibly arrange more games. It’s just the timing of the injuries because they’re not serious, they are minor, but with this tranche of games you only need to miss a week or so and you’ve missed four opportunities to play.

“That’s just pre-season for you.”

Burnley had two offers for Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury rejected on Friday, but Dyche was keeping his cards close to his chest in terms of incoming transfers: “There’s things that are getting closer, they’re not there yet, it’s a tough market - we found that before, and now we’re in a different market it’s still tough to make sure we can get things done, but we are very active.”
