Dyche pleased with hungry striker Vokes

Clarets boss Sean Dyche feels Burnley are seeing a new, improved Sam Vokes.

Vokes has started the first four games of the season, after the sale of Charlie Austin.

And the Wales international has scored in his last two outings against Sheffield Wednesday and Yeovil.

Dyche believes Vokes is reaping the benefits of a good pre-season, and he feels there is a lot more to come from the 23-year-old.

Vokes is something of a gentle giant, but he is added that killer instinct to his game, and Dyche said: “The game’s changing and you want a toughness to your players, but it has to be tempered with refereeing and the way the game has changed.

“It’s about a clever toughness, not running around smashing people - those days have gone, that’s why I’m not playing any more, it wouldn’t have been any use to me!

“But Sam is toughening his resolve, the way he plays and the way he conducts himself. And that’s down to how good shape he’s in, he looks in good shape.”

Vokes deflected in Scott Arfield’s shot to make it 2-0 against Yeovil, and while the goal was initially credited to the Scot, Vokes left no-one in any doubt as to who he felt had scored.

Dyche added: “I love the fact Sam’s now claiming everything. That’s what you want your goalscorers to do, that’s the hunger you want them to have.”

He could have had a hat-trick after twice going close in the first half, while he saw a late effort clearedoff the line: “That hunger is growing. He’s disappointed the lad cleared one off the line from him.”
