Dyche not taking promotion for granted

Michael Kightly’s superb strike just after the restart settled a drab game, where chances were few and far between.

But Burnley did their job, as they await the result of Derby County’s game at Doncaster Rovers tonight, knowing if the Rams fail to win at the Keepmoat Stadium, they cannot be caught.

If Derby win, just two more points are now required in the last three games in any case, and Dyche said: “It’s another part of the business we’ve taken care of, it’s a big win, 11 away unbeaten now, and we had to work hard for it.

“I’ll be keeping up with the Derby game on the way back, and see what’s what, but our focus never changes, we have a game on Monday against Wigan, and if things change, that’s the way it goes.

“But we’ll still be ready on Monday.”

And he felt his side were deserved winners against relegation-threatened Pool: “We felt there was a lot going on at this football club (Blackpool) at this time, and felt that we had to stay focused on us, because the focus might go off us onto other things.

“I thought the players did that well, it was only the last 15 minutes when they started putting the ball in from everywhere, which happens, they were scrambling to get a result, but we delivered a very controlled display.

“There was great energy as ever, great team framework and some very important moments - obviously a sublime goal from Michael Kightly.

“And I thought our two centre halves were outstanding.”

Burnley shot out of the blocks in the second half, and Dyche added: “I didn’t think we’d done too badly in the first half, we’d opened them up a couple of times and Kights had a one on one and unfortunately missed.

“It was a nearly performance, but we started the second half nice and brightly and scored a fantastic goal.”

The Clarets now have 86 points, “Two points a game is a strong marker, we’ve done that all season, and I spoke to Malky Mackay and I think they (Cardiff) finished with 87 last season, so to get 86 with three to go is a powerful message about what we’ve done.

“But it is still so far.”
