The Clarets got the money off their back at Turf Moor against Hull City a fortnight ago, and boss Sean Dyche is eager to build on that win at the Britannia Stadium.

Having recorded that first three-point haul last time out, back to back wins could lift Burnley out of the bottom three, and Dyche said: “There was a hoo-ha outside the camp about that first win, and everyone has to have an angle for a story, but there were questions asked as to whether we would win, and odds that we wouldn’t.

“I always said we would win, but you need to start with one, and it is how quickly you can get it.

“Beating Hull allows us to get on with it.

“It was very important to win, and we all enjoyed it, but it goes beyond that, it won’t define the season - we need an lot more than one win. We have to move forward now.”

Stoke sit ninth in the table, where they finished last season, but they have already lost at home to Aston Villa and Leicester City, although Dyche warned: “I never under-estimate any team, and you especially can’t afford to in the Premier League.

“We are the newcomers and have to try and live up to our own expectations.

“Stoke have been in the Premier League for a few years now, and have very experienced players, international players, and a manager who has done all that as a player and a manager. He’s brought in his own format, and they will be another tough challenge for us.”

A fifth clean sheet of the season would come in handy, with captain Jason Shackell last week statistically hailed the third-best performing defender in the Premier League.

But Dyche is looking to be dominant in both boxes: “Pretty much on the whole we’ve had a solid base, the way I believe in, and we’ve had four clean sheets in 11 league games.

“I believe the club only had three last time in the Premier League all season. But we have to be clinical in both boxes, and that is enhanced at this level.

“We have shown good signs, particularly defensively, and we have to take that further. Doing okay isn’t enough. We have to be very solid tactically and defensively, but you need that extra quality to open teams up.”
