Dyche backs Arfield for Scotland call-up

The midfielder - scorer of the Clarets’ only goal to date against Chelsea - is adapting well to his first taste of Premier League football.

But, to the bemusement of many, he will miss out on facing World Cup winners Germany in Dortmund on Sunday, as he continues to be overlooked by Scotland boss Gordon Strachan.

Strachan named six Championship midfielders ahead of the 25-year-old for their first Euro 2016 qualfier - including Wolves’ former Burnley man Kevin McDonald.

Arfield, who started his career with Falkirk, represented his country at Under 19, 21 and B level, but four years have passed since his last international involvement.

He scored nine goals last season to help Burnley earn promotion to the Premier League as Championship runners-up, and, despite his fine start to this campaign, he seemingly remains surplus to requirements for his country.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche feels if he maintains his performances, he will get his just rewards: “I’m sure they’ve got their scouting network open, - I’m sure they look at all players who are available.

I know that if he continues his business like he is doing, then he’d certainly be in the reckoning I’d imagine, but that’s for them to decide. I’ve got no problem with that.”

Full international recognition would cap an amazing story for Arfield, after his release from Huddersfield Town last summer, as Dyche added: “It’s fair to say he’s had an interesting 14 months! I think he was looking at possibly Southend and MK Dons 14 months ago, with all due respect to them, then he came to Burnley and has been an absolute credit to himself, the team and the club.”
