Dwight McNeil shines as England Under 21s suffer cruel late exit at Euros
Dwight McNeil starred as England Under 21s were cruelly eliminated from the European Championships by an injury time goal.
The Burnley winger, earning his 10th cap, hit bar and post in a busy display, and teed up Liverpool’s Curtis Jones with a deft touch to put Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions 2-0 up against Croatia in Slovenia - the minimum margin they needed to win by to advance, providing Portugal beat Switzerland.
Eberechi Eze’s first half penalty, following a foul on Eddie Nketiah put England halfway to their target, as Portugal eased to a 3-0 win over the Swiss.
And when McNeil took down a drilled in cross from substitute Rhian Brewster and showed great composure to tee up Jones, England looked to have done their job.
But after McNeil was replaced by Steven Sessegnon for the closing stages, Croatia stunned England with Domagoj Bradaric smashing in a superb late strike to send Igor Biscan’s charges through.
