Draw a fair result - Dyche

Sean Dyche admitted a point apiece was probably fair as Burnley ground out a goal-less draw at bottom side Sunderland.

The Clarets' search for a first away win of the season continues, but they moved eight points clear of the drop zone with a first clean sheet since the end of January.

Burnley bossed the first half, but crucially couldn't get their noses in front, and the hosts, marooned at the bottom, came out for the second half with nothing to lose.

Dyche said: "I was pleased with the first half, without being dominant, we had control of the game, I felt.

"We created two really golden chances, and, I haven't seen it back, but possibly a shout for a penalty for what looked a loose arm when Boydy struck one...I was a long way away to be fair.

"We kept them to very little first half.

"And then second half, they've got to have a go obviously, the feel around the ground was a must-win. They created two great chances, then we go up the other end and have a great chance.

"But in the first half, the psychology and feel in the stadium would have changed drastically if we'd have nicked that goal we deserved."Sunderland had the better chances in the second half, however: "We started the second half a bit slow, they started a bit better than us, went 4-2-4 getting the ball forward, as you would, and they got a couple of situations, one from a penalty shout at the other end.

"Overall, it's probably about right, both teams had chances, but we had chances early to change the feel in the stadium, which was probably my only question mark.

"The mentality was good, they were throwing stuff at us at the end, and we keep a clean sheet and come away with a point."

And a point away from home at this level is not to be sniffed at: "Despite our run, if you speak to managers in the Premier League, which I do of course, they generally say if you get a clean sheet and a point away in the Premier League, it's a valuable one.

"It's slightly different because we haven't won a game and it's all about that, but I did think, Vokesy goes through at the end, he stays on his feet when he's getting tugged, and I don't want to open up that can of worms, but he strikes it and their keeper makes a great save.

"I thought that might have been the moment, our fans were right on top of that.

"They were fantastic again."

Those fans have been long-suffering on the road this season, despite the overall picture with Burnley lying 12th in the table, before Bournemouth's evening kick-off with Swansea.

And Dyche said: "The fans have been incredible, home and away, and they have been a big part of our success for a long time. They know the team give everything, even if it doesn't go our way.

"There's no lack of effort or pride in the shirt, it's just maybe on any given day, we haven't played well.

"The fans have been terrific, and we're going to need them.

"Its only a so-far story, we're in good shape, points on the board, when everyone thought we'd get nothing and be struggling. So we're going to need them.

"Nine games left, five at home, a lot of work to be done, but I'm sure they'll back us."
