Defensive base is something to build on - Burnley boss Sean Dyche

But while Burnley climbed off the bottom of the table, they remain without a win, and continue to struggle to score goals, after a fourth game without finding the net, and fifth in six.

His side welcomed back captain Ben Mee, who has been out since the end of June, and the skipper shone in a goalless draw, in a typical defensive display.

And Dyche was pleased with that aspect of his side’s performance: “I think we’ve had three out of the last four games where there has at least been a performance, especially the feel of the performance.

“The nature of how we’ve had to go through the Premier League, we’ve had to defend very well, which we did tonight, diligently, and we’ve had to try and create when we could.

“That’s bit is still a bit short, on that side of things, but I think Brighton are a decent outfit, they’ve spent a lot of money over the last few years and I think Graham is doing a good job in moulding them into how he wants to operate, so we don’t think these are easy tasks.

“A lot of the performance was right about us, we know we’ve got to continue to search for better quality chances, but a lot of the performance was right about what we found has been successful for us over a number of years in the Premier League.

“We’ve got to work diligently as a side and defend very well, and we did that.”

That lack of goals is a real concern, with starting strikers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes only scoring once between themselves so far this season.

And Dyche noted: “It’s hard to score goals in the Premier League, I think last year was our highest total, so we know the goals are there, our history strongly suggests we have players who can score goals in the Premier League.

“Sometimes it’s a weird thing, you go through spells when it’s not working for you, and suddenly you pop out of that.

“You can’t always define those moments.

“We know we’re short of goals at the moment, we’re not hiding from that, but it’s important we have a base to build from, and three of the last four games we have had that.

“We’ve looked, Chelsea game aside, strong in our shape and our diligence defensively, and we have found chances.

“To be fair, we found great chances against West Brom, couldn’t quite take them, and I know it’s ifs and ands, but if you nick that one, it’s four points and it looks slightly different.

“We’re never a million miles away, but three of the last four is a good base to build from, but we have to build from it, games don’t come easy, so we have to build and create more chances.“

Dyche had a feel his players could craft that one moment of quality to win the points on the back of their solidity at the back, but despite Matt Lowton hitting the bar with a cross, chances were thin on the ground: “I was saying on the sidelines to Woany, I had that feeling of a Burnley performance in a sense, we kept it tight and we normally find a way of finding a real golden chance.

“When Vyds got played in behind, we might just nick one and you come away with a nice win, after being really diligent as a side defensively.

“It wasn’t to be tonight, but we’ve done that many times.

“Away from home, often, not always, it’s trickier, statistically.

“I know there’s no fans in the stadiums, but players are used to their home ground.

“It’s another point on the board, another part of regaining what were are about, and that comes with getting people fit, and real fitness.

“Ben Mee will move on again from that, he’s done veer so well physically, Matt Lowton is getting better physically and stronger, Robbie Brady will get fitter and stronger - these are players that have missed a good chunk of time.

“Other players have missed again with Bardo and Dale, and Corky a bit longer term, so we still have strong players to come back in, but we want these players to be really sharp and I think it’s coming.

“It has to come quickly, we’ve got to make sure we look after ourselves by getting wins on the board, but I think these performances are a good base.“
