Death of one of oldest surviving Clarets

Burnley Football Club is sad to announce the death of Gordon Haigh, one of the oldest surviving former Clarets, just four days after he celebrated his 90th birthday.

After serving in the RAF during the Second World War, Barnsley-born Gordon joined the Clarets in 1945 as Burnley, along with all other senior clubs, prepared for the resumption of League football in 1946.

Playing at inside right, Gordon scored the winner on his Burnley debut, a spectacular overhead kick in a 3-2 victory against Newport County at Turf Moor in September 1946. After 18 games and three goals for the Clarets he was transferred to Bournemouth in 1950, a year later moving to Watford where he ended his Football League career.

He later returned north to play non League football for Rossendale United and Nelson before he retired in 1953.

The thoughts of all of us at Burnley Football Club are with Gordon’s family and friends at this sad time.
