David Edgar looking for Burnley to do the double over Blackpool

And David Edgar admits it would be sweet to join the classes of ‘47, ‘61, ‘73 and ‘92 by earning an 11th victory on the road in a Lancashire derby at Blackpool tomorrow.

The Seasiders know a win will seal a play-off place, as they look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

But the Clarets go in search of a double after a televised 3-1 win at Turf Moor in October, and Canada international Edgar said: “We talked about about a bit of history before the game at Leicester, we wanted to not only equal the record but to break it.

“We can’t do that now, but we still want to equal it at Blackpool.

“It’s a massive game for the fans and for us, Blackpool are fighting for promotion and have been on a really good run recently.

“They’ll want revenge for the points we took off them at home.

“They probably didn’t play at their best, but we played really well, and it will be another hard game.”

That win over Ian Holloway’s side is another example of what this Burnley side is capable - having also beaten West Ham and Middlesbrough, and done the double over Hull and Brighton.

Edgar admits there is a level of frustration that Burnley aren’t pushing for a top six place: “We’ve done the double over Brighton, beaten teams that are up there, so it’s tough to take that we’re not in there, but it’s been a learning curve this year, we’ve dropped points when we shouldn’t have, and it’s come back to haunt us.

“But we’ve learned a lot and cut out those mistakes, and it’s positive going into next season.

“The past couple of weeks have been really positive and we want to finish things off in the same vein and build for next year.”

Edgar has more than played his part in a vastly-improved Burnley defence which, since the turning point of the season - the 3-2 win at Hull in November, courtesy of a brace from Edgar - is the third best in the Championship.

Since that incredible game at the KC Stadium, the Clarets have conceded just 24 goals in 26 league games, keeping 11 clean sheets in that time.

Edgar said: “The manager’s given me my chance and shown a lot of faith in me, he played that position and has helped me.

“We’ve got players that have the freedom to play in the final third, and as long as we’re locking it down at the back, we have a chance.

“We’ve defended quite well recently, and it was nice to get another clean sheet at Leicester.”

Burnley will again go to Bloomfield Road without Jay Rodriguez, Martin Paterson and Ben Mee, but are hopeful skipper Chris McCann can shake off the knock that forced him off with just over 10 minutes remaining at Leicester on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Burnley will play Preston North End in the Final of the Lancashire FA Youth Cup at Deepdale on Wednesday, May 2nd.

Admission prices are £4 adults and £2 concessions, and all payment will be at the turnstiles on the night.

Due to Terry Pashley’s side reaching the final, the Central League Reserve Fixture against Macclesfield Town, scheduled for the same night will now take place on Friday, May 4th, at Turf Moor (kick-off 7 p.m.).

The Clarets reached the final with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Blackpool at Turf Moor on Monday night.
