David Edgar hurt by Burnley’s league position

Burnley have eight games left to finish the season as high up the Championship as possible, and the Canada international insists the side are better than their current position suggests.

Portsmouth are next up at Fratton Park tomorrow, and Edgar hopes to end a run of five away games without a win:“It doesn’t do us justice.

“Our standing in the league does hurt.

“Nobody in the team likes losing or drawing. We want to win every game.

“That’s the mentality we have at this club and that’s what the manager wants in the team.

“It does hurt when we don’t.

“We want to try to pick up as many points as we can to move up the table.

“We haven’t had a win in a while but our performances of late have been quite good. We just want to take all the positives from those and put them in to one good performance.

“We feel as if we’re going to get a hatful of goals at one point. Hopefully that comes sooner rather than later.

“Obviously we want to win as many games as we can and get back to keeping clean sheets.”

The play-offs are out of reach realistically, but, while pride is at stake, Edgar would like to finish the season in the top half of the division at least: “The main objective at the beginning of the season was to get in the play-offs and go up. There was a point when we definitely thought we could do that, especially after that period where we did really well. But things change but we’ve got to move on from here.

“We’ve fallen off a little bit, but we always set short-term targets here.

“We want to keep doing that until the end of the season and that’s what our goal is.

“It’s been up and down this season but we want to finish as high as we can and take it through into next season. That’s our goal.”

Edgar believes you can take that momentum forward into next season as well: “I think so. It helps.

“Especially coming back in pre-season and knowing if you finished the previous season strongly, it definitely helps and we build from there for the new season.

“We’ll take it one game at a time for the next eight games.”

The former Newcastle man won’t be signing off at the end of the season, with international duty on the horizon.

And he also has one eye on getting a call for his country, should they qualify for the Olympics: “I’ve got quite a busy summer.

“I think we get together with Canada mid-May for a friendly with the USA for a 100-year anniversary.

“We play in the US and Toronto, and then we’ve got two World Cup qualifiers.

“But the Canada Under 23 team just beat the US 2-0 in an Olympic qualifier.

“They’re second in the group and play Mexico tomorrow for a place in the Olympics.

“I could maybe be involved in that as well because you’re allowed three over-age players.

“They’ve asked us to fill in the forms so if they qualify and I get the phonecall it would be an unbelievable experience.

“I don’t mind playing through the summer.

“I’ve said since I’ve been here I want to play football and I just want that to continue.

“It’s going to be one of those summers that I can’t take my foot off the gas, see the family, relax a bit and then get straight back into it.”
