Danny hoping for international bow

The squad met up at St George’s Park to train yesterday and today, ahead of flying out tomorrow for Thursday’s UEFA European U21 ChampionshipGroup One Qualifier against San Marino at the Stadio Olimpico, Serravalle.

Gareth Southgate’s men will fly straight back after the game to Ipswich for Tuesday’s second qualifier at Portman Road against Lithuania.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche revealed that he spoke to new England Under 21 coach Southgate about the club’s star striker before the Three Lions squad was unveiled.

Dyche, who joined the national set up as a temporary member of the backroom staff just a month before being appointed at the helm at Turf Moor, claimed he highlighted the potential of the 21-year-old to Stuart Pearce’s successor around a month ago.

“I think it’s fully deserved,” said Dyche.

“I spoke to Gareth Southgate about a month ago and made him aware of my thoughts on Danny and he’s weighed that up.

“I’m delighted for Danny and it’s great that he’s been recognised for his ongoing run of form and performances.

“We had a general chat but he’s aware.

“They do their homework wisely the England set-up and they know who is out there.

“We talked about football, how he’s finding it and how I’m finding it, and we just got on to it.

“I promoted the fact that I think he’s a very good young player and somebody who is learning and improving all the time.”

The hitman will be joined by West Brom’s Saido Berahino, Spurs’ Harry Kane, and Manchester United’s Nick Powell, currently on loan at Wigan Athletic, in the forward ranks.

Should Ings feature, he will become only the third player in the club’s history to represent the Under 21s following on from Jay Rodriguez and Richard Chaplow.

Rodriguez was the last, earning his first and only cap as a 60th minute substitute against Italy Under 21s in 2011.

Chaplow also picked up the one cap, coming on for Nigel Reo-Coker for the last seven minutes of a 3-2 win over Holland at Hull City’s KC Stadium in February 2004.
