Dane Richards fires double to put Jamaica through

WINGER Dane Richards netted twice to fire Jamaica into the final round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying following a 4-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda at the National Stadium on Tuesday.

The Vancouver Whitecaps wideman, who will join Burnley on January 1st, scored the last two goals for the Reggae Boyz.

Leeds’ Rodolph Austin pulled the ball back for Richards to sweep home 12 minutes from time, before Jermaine Hue produced a superb diagonal ball, allowing Richards to slot past the keeper and earning a place in next year’s final round alongside Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, and the United States.

Honduras qualified at the expense of David Edgar’s Canada, following a remarkable 8-1 win.

The Canucks only needed a draw to progress, but were 4-0 down at half-time, and former Preston forward Iain Hume’s goal was not even a consolation.

Jerry Bengtson and former Birmingham loan man Carlo Costly both scored hat tricks to end Canadian hopes of reaching Brazil 2014.

In the next round, the teams will play each other home and away from next March through to November, where the top three teams will gain automatic berths to the World Cup Finals, with the fourth-placed team facing the winner of the Oceania group in a two-legged play-off.

Another Claret collecting a cap was striker Sam Vokes.

Vokes, who has only made two starts all season since a summer move from Wolves, came on as a substitute for Wales in their 2-0 defeat in Croatia.

Left back Danny Lafferty was an unused substitute for Northern Ireland, who produced a stunning result, drawing 1-1 with Portugal in Porto.
