England manager Gareth Southgate was due to announce his squad for March's fixtures on Thursday, with central defence an area for potential fresh faces.

Indeed, according to a report in The Athletic, Southgate has 'made discreet inquiries about Burnley defender Ben Mee’s suitability' with the outlet also stating 'he recently asked whether Mee might now be ready for international honours'.

Southgate often visits Turf Moor for to check on the progress of goalkeeper Nick Pope, promising 20-year-old winger Dwight McNeil and Mee's defensive partner James Tarkowski.

The Athletic's source also said: “He is a consummate professional, will not let you down, and is quite a threat at set-pieces”

“But the worry is he’s not had his debut. And giving away that penalty against Tottenham won’t have helped.”

Mee will be 31 this coming September; however, if the Euros are delayed until 2021, the picture could change and Mee could miss out.
