Clarke ready for new role

CLARETS defender Clarke Carlisle is looking forward to getting stuck in to his new position off the field.

Carlisle recently replaced Chris Powell as chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) at the latest AGM.

The commanding centre half had been waiting in the wings, having sat on the PFA’s management committee for the last five years.

The committee is a select group of 10 senior professional players who advise chief executive Gordon Taylor in relation to the services the union offers its members.

And now he’s hoping to make an impact.

He said: “It’s excellent. I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’ve not had much to do and my involvement has been small at this point.

“But I’m really looking forward to everything that the role entails - to be able to offer a positive input into the goings on at the union and hopefully representing and supporting the playing staff in an honourable and responsible way.”

But that’s not the only thing keeping the Countdown king busy away from Turf Moor.

The Staffordshire University student is currently on the Professional Sportswriting and Broadcasting (PSWB) degree at the Stoke-on-Trent campus.

He added: “I was up until midnight the other night typing up an interview with Casey Wesserman at WMG, trying to get his perspective on the debacle of the World Cup bid.

“It’s a two-year course which I only started this summer, so 18 months to go.”
