Burnley progressed in the inaugural U21 Premier League Cup with a penalty shootout win over Wigan Athletic at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.

After the game finished goal-less after 120 minutes, in front of a crowd of 581, the Clarets came through 7-6 on spot kicks, with Jamie Frost netting the winner.

The Clarets might have avoided the lottery had they taken their chances in extra time, with Brian Stock, one of three over-age outfield players, passing an effort wide after a glorious one-two with Steve Hewitt, having also hit the bar with a free kick.

Wigan had their moments, with Alex Coleman making a remarkable goalline clearance at the death from Luke Ainscough, while Frost performed similar heroics to deny Sam Cosgrove.

So the tie went to penalties. Adam Buxton slipped and fired high and wide, and Hewitt and Stock converted before Luke Gallagher effort was saved.

Kevin Long then hit the bar after Alex Cisak saved from Nouha Dicko, but when Cisak saved again from Mayowa Balogun, Frost settled the issue.

Burnley will now travel to Crewe in qualifying round two with a date to be finalised.
