Clarets' focus has served them well

The mantra hasn't shifted at any point this season and that's why Burnley are where they are, according to full back Stephen Ward.

Even with the prospect of Europa League football tantalisingly close to being mathematically rubber-stamped the Republic of Ireland international is refusing to let his focus jolter.

That ‘one game at a time’ mentality stems from boss Sean Dyche, but it’s a philosophy that has been taken on whole-heartedly by the squad.

The Clarets could yet break in to the top six, with a trip to the Emirates still to come on the penultimate weekend of the season, but 32-year-old Ward is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“We’re in a great position,” said the former Wolves defender.

“No one would have thought we would be where we are, but there are still a few games to go.

“There’s a mantra at this place, especially with the gaffer, that we take each game and each day as it comes.

“We’ll work hard every day on the training pitch and prepare, and that’s what we’ll do until the end of the season.

“If it does come that way, we can qualify.

“We’ve given ourselves a chance.

“But we’ll only be thinking about the next game now, going out and putting on a performance. We’ll see where we are after that.

“It’s obviously great.

“It’s a fantastic achievement from the lads.

“We just want to finish as high up the league and as strongly as we can.”
