Clarets youth team striker called up to Northern Ireland squad

Claret Shay McCartan has been rewarded for his impressive start to the season with a first call-up to the Northern Ireland under-19 squad.

The striker, who has scored four times in Burnley’s opening two youth-team games, has been included in the Irish squads to play two challenge matches against Switzerland next month.

Defender Luke Conlon, who joined Burnley’s youth set-up in the summer, has been placed on stand-by for the fixtures in Ballymoney on Saturday, September 3rd and Monday, September 5th.

McCartan has previously played for Northern Ireland at under-17 level and earns his promotion despite being a year younger than the maximum age.

“He has started the season really well,” said Clarets’ director of youth Martin Dobson. “He is fit, he has got good ability and we want to push on with him.

“We are delighted for him and he fully deserves this recognition from his national team. We are delighted for him.”
