Clarets need to show their true identity on the road - Dyche

Sean Dyche believes the Clarets need to show their true identity away from home if they are to remedy their travel sickness in the Premier League.

The Burnley boss insists that his side has delivered that aspect at Turf Moor, adopting a strong-willed mentality that has boosted them in to the top flight’s top five for home form.

However, it’s been a different story on the road as the Clarets have been a less convincing version of themselves with one point accrued and 13 goals leaked in five outings.

And Dyche feels that his group of champions need to develop that winning thinking, in addition to delivering a more characteristic display, if they are to be successful, starting against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium tomorrow.

“The thing at home is our basic identity has been good, then we’ve mixed that, we’ve played direct against Man City, that was the game plan, we played more mixed football against Watford, mixed and well organised against Arsenal,” he said.

“We’ve done that well. Even when we played 4-4-2 there were little twists that changed that. We’ve done that well at home, we’ve changed the shape and had twists on the shape.

“Away we haven’t quite glued it all together with what we’re about. Our identity in its basic form and then adding in the tactical twists and turns, that’s the next thing.”

Dyche added: “Beyond how the game plays out it is that winning thinking, the extra bits that add up to that winning formula.

“I don’t think we’ve delivered our side of it as well as we can do. Some of that is not down to the level of the opposition, we’ve got to add more than we’ve shown away from home, but it’s difficult, you’ve got another Premier League team out there.

“It’s been a strange conundrum. I don’t think we’ve performed to the levels we know we can.

“There’s been signs of it and pockets of it but not that feeling for 95 minutes, and you’ve got to have that mind set all the time.”

The Britannia Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for the Clarets, with six wins and draw draws secured in the last 10 visits to the Potteries.

The latest triumph was two years ago when the visitors displayed the grit and determination that has arguably been lacking in stages this term.

After Danny Ings scored a quick-fire double, the Clarets were made to battle for the points for the best part of an hour after Jonathan Walters reduced the arrears.

Dyche acknowledges that his side will have to get back to that if they are to take anything away this time out.

“At home, win or lose, you can clearly see that mentality is there, no matter what is happening in any given game at home, and we are going to win it and its non-stop.

“That’s a mind-set as much as anything and it’s been very strong here over a number of games and it’s the first time over a couple of games where it’s been soft.

“The physicality is no problem, we know we’re physically strong, the mind-set is a part of it but those two things have to be joined, and once that is done you can add the layers on top, make sure the shape is good, different formations, different personnel, the mind-set is a really important factor I think.”

He added: “It doesn’t come into my thinking that you’re just going to miraculously win a game because you did two years ago. They’re on a good run, they had an iffy start but I think they’ve got enough depth there to not overthink that.

“Mark Hughes has done a great job at most of his jobs, including this one, I don’t think he was overly concerned. He’s got some good players there, there’s a depth to their squad..

“We did get a good result there two years and we had to fight for every inch of that one for our first away win. They threw everything at us as the game went on.

“Sometimes that’s what you’ve got to do to get a result. First things first is to build on a performance level and see where that takes us.”
