Clarets Madders enjoy a day to remember against their heroes

It’s not often footballers walk off the pitch claiming to have enjoyed the game when it has ended in defeat.

But that was definitely the case with the Clarets Mad team last Sunday, who took a 2-0 lead before going down to a 3-2 defeat against the Vintage Clarets at Padiham’s Arbories.

The hastily put together team introduced themselves to each other in the dressing room, prior to stepping onto the pitch to face some of their heroes such as John Deary, Roger Eli, Andy Farrell and Vince Overson.

On the hottest day of the year they looked favourites for a while at 2-0 before the team of former Clarets came back to win it with goals from Farrell, Graham Lancashire and a dubiously awarded penalty converted by Peter Mumby.

The game was held in memory of former Clarets Madder Tony Nuttall, who sadly passed away last year after losing his battle against cancer. His family were there, among a crowd of over 300, to enjoy the game.

The Vintage Clarets won the game but the biggest winners on the day were MacMillan. Cancer Support who were the chosen charity.

So far over £3,500 has been raised.
