Clarets fan ‘withdraws interest’ in Rovers job and helps family of tragic snow death victim

Burnley season ticket holder James McDonough, from Brunshaw, was even featured in German and French football magazines after the Burnley Express first revealed he had sent a joke application to arch East Lancashire rivals following the sacking of their third manager this season, Michael Appleton.

But despite a strongly-worded statement from the Ewood Park club distancing themselves from the speculation, the joke has still had a positive ending.

A Facebook page entitled MaccaForRovers has managed to raise £100 for the family of Gary Windle, the 25-year-old man and former school mate of James who died at the weekend in the snow.

“It has been a surreal experience but I’ve also managed to do something positive as part of it. Gary went to school with my brother and I wanted to help his family out. It was such a tragedy.

“The application was always a joke but it seemed to gather momentum on Facebook and Twitter. Bookmakers Betvictor picked up on it and my odds for the job were slashed. I’m pleased to say they have agreed to match-fund any money we raise for Gary’s funeral.”

James now plans to return to his day job at Daisy Communications in Nelson, and focus on amateur football.

“It has been an amazing experience. I’ve done national press and radio interviews, and really caught the imagination. I’m hoping I might get a few job offers from pub teams now, but I’m still waiting!”
