Clarets boss Sean Dyche keen to add to squad

But he admits he is not in a position to “cherry pick” talent as he looks to boost his side’s chances of Premier League survival.

Much has been made of a relatively low spend in the summer window - totalling in the region of £8m - and there is money available, but Dyche said: “There is finance available, but we know the market - it’s not that £2 or 3m market, you can see that for yourselves.

“It’s what level we can operate at, what’s available and what we can align to bring in.

“All those key markers are always there at clubs like ours, because if you want us to go out and just cherry pick players, it costs a whole lot of money.

“It’s massive amounts of money now so we have to pick and choose wisely, and I think we have done that in the past, as well as at the start of the season.

“We look to do that again, as and when someone fits what we want to do.”

Ahead of the New Year’s Day trip to Newcastle United - at the halfway stage of the campaign - Burnley sit 19th in the table, only goal difference separating them from Hull City in 17th, two points adrift of QPR in 15th.

Dyche is delighted with his players’ efforts so far, in keeping in touch with the sides in and around them, despite not registering a win until the 11th attempt: “I keep reading about struggling Burnley - I don’t know what the expectation was, or I do actually, that we had no chance at all, so I can’t work out why I keep reading about struggling Burnley.

“There’s a reality to the league table which I’m aware of, but when you look at the way the team is performing, we’re not struggling.

“We haven’t got the points we need, but we’re playing really well, I’m delighted with the players, very intrigued to know where the journey is taking us - I know where it’s going, but there are no guarantees.

“But I’ve been very much enjoying the way the players have been operating.”

l Striker Sam Vokes was rested at Manchester City on Sunday but will come back into the squad at Newcastle.

Dyche said: “He’s fine, it was solely my decision, having been through long term injuries, the adrenaline hit the other day, the crowd going wild for him...when you’ve had eight and a half months of not having that, it’s a big lift and then drain on the body. It was my decision, two games in three days was too early.”
