Gray has scored eight goals since completing a £6m move from Brentford in the summer, attracting the interest of Spurs, according to reports.

But, just over two months into his time at Turf Moor, and under contract until the summer of 2018, Dyche dismissed any fears of losing the 24-year-old: “He's only just got here, he's signed a contract. I think it's pretty comfortable for us to keep hold of a player who has just got here."

Asked why Burnley didn't make a move for Gray last January while in the Premier League, Dyche explained: “Availability, cost, demands, clubs wishing to sell – it's got to all come together.

"Everyone said that this season – why didn't you do all these things last season, as if we didn't try!

"We are not market leaders financially in this division, our wage bill will be nowhere near some. Some who have got massive financial trouble, I know for a fact have got a considerably higher wage bill than us.

"We still cut our cloth accordingly but we think we can stretch that more so because of what happens in the past season and a half. That allowed us to sign people like Andre Gray."
