Chris Wood says the Clarets will be 'fighting like hell' to help land goalkeeper Nick Pope the Golden Glove

The New Zealander, who netted his 13th goal of the campaign in a 2-0 win against Norwich City at Carrow Road, declared that proof of Pope's superiority was in the pudding following a 15th clean sheet of the campaign.

The 28-year-old saved well from both Ben Godfrey and Onel Hernandez to keep the Canaries out and restore pole position, ahead of Manchester City's Ederson, in the battle for the accolade.

And in doing so Pope became the first Burnley keeper to keep 15 clean sheets in a top-flight season since Colin McDonald back in 1954/55.

Wood said: "I think as a team we'll be fighting like hell for him. It'll be fantastic, he's a fantastic keeper, in my opinion the best in England.

"It shows because he's got 15 clean sheets this season, which is unbelievable, especially in a team like Burnley. Hopefully he can get one more to at least get a share of the Golden Glove."

Wood, 28, netted on the stroke of half-time, punished nine man City, as his acrobatic effort from Johann Berg Gudmundsson's delivery squeezed past Tim Krul.

The former Leeds United man, who has hit double figures in each of his three terms at the club in the top flight, is now out in front when it comes to Premier League goal returns for a single season.

"It was nice, I think it was a good time to score before half-time, especially as they'd just gone down to nine men," he said. "It meant they had to come out in the second half to try and get something.

"It's lovely. You always go out there to score as many as you can so it's nice. I was told about that last night and thankfully I popped up with one today to take me to the record."

A 15th win of the campaign was another win for Burnley, who emulated their record points total in the PL from the 2017/18 season.

Wood continued: "It's fantastic; a record number of wins and a record number of points for Burnley. It seems like the club is achieving more every year. We've got a great set of lads and a great community and staff.

"We're very motivated, we want to finish as high as possible to beat the 54-mark and hopefully we can do that with another clean sheet."
