Austin was in Hull to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical, after the clubs agreed a fee over the weekend.

The deal was expected to be completed yesterday, but late last night, the move hit complications and is now dead in the water.

Further details are expected from both clubs today, but speculation has centred on the 24-year-old’s old shoulder injury.

Hull City boss Steve Bruce told talkSPORT “There has been a bit of a problem with his medical, which is the worst scenario for everybody concerned,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“It’s an awful situation we find ourselves in but the medical is not great so it looks as if it is a non-starter at the moment. I think he is surprised because he has not missed many games over the last couple of years.

“It is a blow for him and a blow for us but these medicals are so stringent and obviously he has got a problem.”

Austin has dislocated his shoulder three times since first hurting himself at Swindon Town in 2010, twice having a recurrence of the problem in 2011 after his move to Burnley.

It is unknown whether that history contributed to the move collapsing, but it now leaves Austin and Burnley in an odd situation.

A late offer to improve his contract at Turf Moor, with a year remaining on his current deal, looked to have come to late, but with Hull the only formal bidders, it remains to be seen whether another club will come in - potentially at a further reduced fee - or he can be convinced to stay at Burnley.
