But he believes he can be a ready-made replacement for Charlie Austin after his move to QPR.

Vokes has had to patient for his chance at Turf Moor, after arriving last summer from Wolves, but he netted his first goal of the season in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday, and believes he can form a potent understanding with Danny Ings: “It’s a good opportunity for myself. It’s a big opportunity for Charlie there, he’s a good mate of mine so hopefully he can go there and do well. But this is a chance for me to step up now.

“I’ve started well this season and I feel good.

“It’s a good partnership with Ingsy so I can hopefully go on to more things.

“Myself and Ingsy have played the last few games together and we feel good together, we’re working hard.”

Vokes is hoping for an extended run in the side to prove his worth, and feels his best is yet to come: “I think so. That’s three games in a week now so that will help towards match fitness and playing 90 minutes again will help.”

Burnley continue to search for reinforcements, and he added: “You always need competition in the team and there was that when Charlie was here. I’d expect even more throughout the season.”
