Burnley’s Rachel Brown sits it out as England seal Euro 2013 place

BURNLEY-born Rachel Brown was on the bench as England’s women sealed their place at Euro 2013 on Wednesday evening.

Hope Powell’s side need to beat Croatia at Walsall’s Banks Stadium to edge out Holland at the top of Group 6, and a trip to Sweden next summer.

Rachel’s Everton teammate Jill Scott opened the scoring midway through the first half, before Eni Aluko doubled the advantage just after half-time, and Casey Stoney sealed victory 10 minutes from the end.

Karen Bardsley, who kept Rachel out of the Team GB side in the Olympic Games, took the number one jersey, with Rachel unable to add to her 78 England caps.

The 32-year-old made her debut against Germany in 1997 and played at Euro 2005 and the 2007 World Cup in China, before which she was selected to be part of the FIFA All-Star team that played an exhibition match against the hosts China.

Rachel also played in the Euro 2009 Final against Germany, and featured seven times in England qualifying for the 2011 World Cup, keeping five clean sheets.
