Gudmundsson was stretchered off after a poor challenge from Sheffield United centre back Jack Robinson in Thursday night's Carabao Cup second round tie at Turf Moor, which Burnley won 5-4 on penalties.

The Iceland international's knee was twisted by the force of the impact, but while he still faces a spell on the sidelines, it looks like a medial ligament injury and nothing more serious.

Dyche said: "The early update, I don't want to put timelines on it, but it's a damaged medial ligament, but it is better than we thought it could have been.

"Obviously we were very concerned, and he was, it's calmed down over night, we've had a scan, and it's slightly better than we thought, so it's good news.

"Hopefully it should settle down sooner rather than later, so he's got lucky."

He added: He's had a tough run with injuries, he was looking fit, he's had a good little spell now, and he was looking better in himself, more at ease with his running and his game in general.

"There was a real nervousness about us after the incident, but so far it looks like he's got away with one.

"There is damage but it's not as serious as first feared."
