Former England international winger Lennon is one of five senior players out of contract at the end of the month, and The Athletic have reported that he will turn down a short-term deal to see out the remaining nine games.

He will, instead, only be available for the games at Manchester City, at home to Watford, and the trip to Crystal Palace.

Lennon would have had to sign an extension by Tuesday, and it remains to be seen whether Jeff Hendrick, Phil Bardsley, Joe Hart and Adam Legzdins follow suit.

Lennon, 33, joined Burnley from Everton in the January window in 2018, after Theo Walcott joined the Toffees from Arsenal.

He helped the Clarets seal a seventh place finish and a return to European competition, but has only netted once for the club, in the 4-0 win over Bournemouth at Turf Moor in September 2018.

Sean Dyche spoke of his frustration at the situation on Thursday, saying: “These situations didn’t need to occur but they have occurred.
