Burnley University College of Football Business to inspire teens

Lecturers, staff and students from UCFB will be working with teenagers from across the region in areas such as literacy and languages as part of its new 2012 community programme.

UCFB has also developed a mentoring programme, which will be led by its undergraduates and staff, engaging with young people aged 13 and 14, providing them with support, guidance and inspiration.

The higher education institution has also developed a language programme and is working with Burnley Football Club offering tours of Turf Moor in a foreign language, including French, German and Spanish.

UCFB opened in September and offers three BA (Hons) undergraduate degrees in football business and finance, football business and marketing and football business and media.

Tim Newton, football business and media student at UCFB, said: “Being given the opportunity to work with young people in this way will be very rewarding and a great experience for us.”

Philip Wilson, provost and chief executive of UCFB, said: “Developing a community programme was something we were really keen to do and with the mix of activities we’re undertaking, we hope that we can have a significant and positive impact on the futures of some of our region’s teenagers.

“We work within a unique environment here at Turf Moor, and to offer young people business and management activities in a foreign language is a way to stimulate their interest in their learning, and we’ve seen exactly that on our programmes so far.

“It was great to see so many of our undergraduates volunteer to take part in this work and over the years we’ll be looking to work with more schools and colleges from across Lancashire, evolving our community programme even further.”
