Noble netted a second half equaliser against Crewe at Gresty Road on Wednesday night, before defender Alex Coleman struck a late winner.

Burnley, who disposed of Wigan Athletic on penalties at Turf Moor in the first round, started well at Crewe, with Jamie Frost - who scored the winning spot kick against the Latics - prominent again.

However, the Clarets went behind on the half hour from a corner, right back James Ballie firing past Nick Liversedge.

But Simon Weatherstone’s men fought back to win after the break.

Cameron Howieson and Noble, both involved with the first team the night before, had chances before Noble equalised just after the hour.#

Danny Lafferty found Noble on the left, and he cut inside onto his right foot and hit a fierce shot that deflected over Crewe keeper Ben Garratt to level matters.

Moments later, Crewe almost got their noses in front again, but Billy Waters’ overhead kick was cleared off the line by Lafferty.

Substitute Luke Gallagher, on for Frost, and Noble sent shots narrowly wide as Burnley chased a winner, and with extra time looming, the Clarets won a corner,.

Steve Hewitt’s flag kick led to blocks from Garratt from Gallagher and Noble, but captain Coleman made no mistake from 12 yards, firing into the top corner.

Burnley will now face Sunderland in the third round, with the date to be announced.
