Burnley striker Paterson joins Huddersfield Town

TERRIER: Martin Paterson has ended his five year association with the Clarets

The two parties had been in prolonged talks over a package to keep the striker at Turf Moor, but an agreement wasn’t reached and Terriers boss Mark Robins pounced to land the out of contract forward.

The Nothern Ireland international was signed from Scunthorpe United by Owen Coyle in June 2008, scoring 12 league goals in his debut season which contributed to the club’s rise to the Premier League. His final goal that term was a rocket in the play-off semi-final second leg triumph over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

Paterson made 23 appearances in England’s top tier but the following two campaigns were severely hampered by a thigh injury. He returned to full fitness last season and went on to finish as the Clarets second leading scorer - behind Charlie Austin - with eight goals.

Terriers boss Robins said: “Martin represents another excellent signing to the group of forward players in the squad. In addition to his arrival, we will still be looking to add to our strike force as the summer transfer window progresses.”

He added: “I am a firm believer in putting round pegs in round holes and Martin has come to the club to play as a striker.

“He played three quarters of his 41 games for Burnley last season in a wide position, but his career history shows that he has flourished as a central striker and that is the role he feels is his best. I agree and he will fulfil that role for us.”
