Burnley striker Ings set to see a specialist

Ings was hurt by a poor challenge from Birmingham City midfielder Tom Adeyemi last Wednesday, and missed Saturday’s 2-1 win over Leeds United at Turf Moor as a result.

He has had a scan, but the club await the full prognosis, and he revealed at the Football League Awards at the Brewery in London that he will see a specialist tomorrow.

Manager Sean Dyche said: “It’s his upper ankle ligament so we’ll get it checked out in more detail this week.

“He’s already had a scan, that follows up with an opinion, so we’ll wait for that opinion.”

Asked how long Ings could be out for, Dyche added: “There are people a lot more specialist than me who decide about injuries.”

But Ings must be considered doubtful for the forthcoming trip to Charlton Athletic on Saturday, and visit of Doncaster Rovers next Tuesday, with leaders Leicester City next up at Turf Moor the following Saturday.

Dyche handed January signing Ashley Barnes a full debut against Leeds, and he was pleased with what he saw from the former Brighton man: “It’s a great opportunity for someone else, as you saw.

“The team has won again and we take great value in the group - and the group is the key thing.

“It’s hard making your full debut, we all know that, and he looked a bit nervy and a bit edgy for the first 15-20 minutes, slowly got stronger in the first half and then in the second half I thought you saw what he’s about.

“He’s willing to work, his hold-up play was very good, his awareness from his hold-up play, we take great value in him and we think he’s going to do very well for us. He’s been working well in training, waiting for his chance.

“We’re really pleased for Ashley.”

Should Ings’ injury be worse than feared, Dyche has until a week on Thursday to utilise the loan window, but the usual scenario prevails - getting the right player, who is available, wants to come and compete for a place, and fits within the budget.
