Burnley striker Ings eager for more after England debut

Ings came on as a 65th-minute substitute for Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling in the 4-0 win in San Marino a week last Thursday.

And although a slight ankle knock kept him out of the 5-0 win against Lithuania at Ipswich last Tuesday, he was back in Claret and Blue as Burnley stretched their Championship lead to two points with a 1-0 win at Portman Road on Saturday.

Ings looked back on his international bow: “It was probably the best week of my life.

“Wearing the Three Lions on my shirt was a dream come true for me and my family.

“It was a massive surprise.

“It’s tough for a Championship player to be called up into that set-up, but it just shows Gareth Southgate’s looking outside the Premier League and it’s been massive for me.

“There’s lots of talent in the Championship. For me there’s not that much different to the Premier League, and that’s being shown because there are a few of us in the Under 21s now who are playing in the Championship.”

But, having played alongside talents like Sterling, Wilfried Zaha, Ravel Morrison and Tom Ince, Ings is eager to kick on and earn the call again: “I look at them and think, ‘I want to do better than you and push myself further than you and become a better player’.

“And that’s what I’ll strive for every day.

“It’s important I keep my discipline and work hard every day.

“It makes me hungry to be part of that and be involved in that hopefully one day and I’ll push myself as hard as I can to get there.

All I can do is my best to become a better player.”
