Burnley to play host to Sparta Rotterdam in pre-season friendly

Burnley Football Club is delighted to announce a pre-season friendly against Dutch opponents Sparta Rotterdam at Turf Moor on Saturday, July 27 (KO 3.30pm).

Sparta, the oldest professional football team in the Netherlands and one of three clubs from Rotterdam, have been crowned Dutch champions six times and have won the Dutch Cup on three occasions.

The club, which currently plays in the Eerste Divisie (the second tier of Dutch professional football), has also represented the Netherlands seven times in European competition, the last coming in the UEFA Cup campaign of 1986.

Their most successful European campaign came in the 1959/60 season, where they reached the quarter final stage of the European Cup.

The club boasts one of the best youth Academies in Holland, producing former Dutch legends such as Ed de Goey (Chelsea), Danny Blind (Ajax) and Winston Bogarde (Chelsea) are from our youth academy.

Recent graduates include Marvin Emnes (Middlesbrough) and Kevin Strootman (PSV & captain of the Dutch national team).
