Burnley need to repsond - David Edgar

After opening 2013 with three clean sheets in as many league victories, Sean Dyche’s side have slipped to just a solitary point from nine available in their latest Championship outings.

The Clarets surrendered an early lead at London Road last weekend in a 2-2 draw with Peterborough United and they suffered a similar misfortune on Saturday in the derby defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.

But the Canadian international is predicting a response against Huddersfield Town at Turf Moor, though the fixture is dependent on the Terriers’ FA Cup fourth round result against the Foxes at the King Power Stadium this evening.

“We need to put results together and keep moving up the league,” said Edgar. “We need to get some more wins under our belt and we have been really good of late but we’ve just taken our foot off the gas a little.

“Before this we were doing really well but the last few results have taken the shine off that a little and we need to make sure we put that right next week.

“It is a good league from top to bottom and any team can beat anyone else in any week and that is what the Championship has proved.

“We are back at home next and our home form has been crucial. Nobody wants to lose games – especially local derbies and we will want get a reaction next week and being the type of team we are we will get one no doubt.”

Edgar broke the deadlock within 10 minutes of the second half at Burnden Way, but a tactical change from Trotters boss Dougie Freedman saw substitutions Craig Davies and David Ngog steal the points.

After scoring his first goal since his double at the KC Stadium in the 3-2 triumph over Hull City last term, the Canucks defender said: “We were on the front foot in the first half and in the beginning of the second half when we got the first goal and you could see the whole atmosphere changing around the place with the crowd getting on their backs and it is just disappointing the way we conceded.

“Once we got the goals we took our foot of the gas a bit and we should have taken advantage of their crowd turning on them and put a lot of pressure on them. But we stopped playing it out from the back and stopped playing our football that we played in the first half and the first ten minutes of the second half.

“We have got to be mentally stronger and that is what the gaffer has been trying to get across to us and we have got to be mentally stronger to get onto the ball even when the crowd are going wild and our fans are going wild and we need that little bit of composure. We just lost that a little bit after we scored.”

Edgar added: “After the substitutions they went a bit more direct and put us under a bit more pressure, though we were still quite comfortable. Even though they got the two goals we still defended well. We just stopped playing as a team. That’s what hurt us.”

“Our fans were great today and out screamed the opposition and we are just disappointed we did not give them the three points.”

And Edgar, who rose above Jay Spearing to nod Chris McCann’s header beyond Adam Bogdan from close range, explained the comedic celebration that followed his third goal for the club.

“I was happy to score but the result kind of takes the shine off it a bit,” he said. “I am just disappointed that it was not the winning goal.

“We’ll be looking for a reaction next week at home and hopefully we’ll put it right then.

“The celebration was just a little dance, a bit of banter with the boys. I’ve been waiting a while to do it; last November it was when I last scored.”
