The 31-year-old, whose contract with the club expires in the summer, limped off in the first half of Burnley’s 2-2 draw with West Brom at the weekend in seemingly innocuous circumstances. However he failed to return after the interval and was replaced by Michael Kightly.

Marney, signed by Brian Laws in May 2010, has made 188 appearances for the Clarets in all competitions and scored nine goals since joining from Hull City.

The former Spurs man, who has featured 20 times in the Premier League this term, is the third Claret in 11 months to suffer the injury after Sam Vokes and Kevin Long were sidelined.
