Burnley midfielder Jones won’t dwell on disappointment

The Foxes inflicted a first defeat in 17 league games on Sean Dyche’s side on Saturday, but Burnley remain masters of their own destiny in second place, nine points clear of QPR and 10 from Derby County with seven games to play.

Next up is a trip to Dyche’s old club Watford on Saturday, and Jones expects a response from the squad: “We’re not a team that dwells on disappointment - that’s been the message of our season and it’s no different this time.

“The philosophy of the club since I came here was to look at each game and really go hard.

“That’s the mentality the gaffer has put in our heads.

“We’ll move on.”

So far this season, Burnley have lost only four league games - only Scunthorpe have lost as few in the entire Football League – and the previous three led to unbeaten league runs of 12, four and 16 games respectively.

Jones hopes for a similar reaction: “We’ve got to remember where we’ve come, and how far we’ve gone, we’ve got seven game left and we’re looking forward to them.

“We’ve focusing on ourselves, although you want a cushion for what position you are in the league, but the manager will be getting us focused and moving on to a big game at Watford.

“We’ve had disappointments in the season with defeats, but our reaction to them ha been very good. We need to react to this one in the same way and I know the lads will be up for it.

“It’s a big seven games and we need all the fans behind us for this, we’re looking forward to it. We’re in a great position and we’ve been excited about the run-in in training. It’ll be no different this week.”

Dyche will hope to see the return from injury of key players, but Jones added: “We can’t look to things like that. We’ve got to rearrange things and get on with what the game throws at you.

“Other teams have injury worries. I know our squad on paper isn’t the biggest but we’ve got good quality that can come in, and we’ve shown that through the season. It’s only one defeat against the top of the league so we need to put it into perspective.”
